Wiki Overview for ITS

  • Why a Wiki?
    • Easy to create content, from anywhere with web browser access
    • Designed for collaboration - history, tracking, ...
    • Flexible structure
    • Overall ease of use
  • Why Mediawiki (MW)?
    • Although there are dozens of wiki packages, many with some or many better features, Mediawiki is used at Wikipedia
  • Where the Wiki?
    • The bulk of ITS on-line info will be in the Wiki, which will reside amid: formal, more static information (e.g., staffing, policies) at www.colgate.edu; more structured information (e.g., alerts, updates, mailings) on a blog server available directly or via RSS; and, more focused links and feed readers in the portal and the Google Apps start page.

    • Options - History, Protect, Move, Watch
    • Edit, Preview, Show Changes, Cancel
    • Discussion tab
    • External Links... URLs
    • Internal Links... Page names
    • Most basic MW formatting is described and demonstrated here
  • Documents = Images
    • OK, this is ugly!
    • Upload a document as an Image
      • Wiki name independent of file name
      • Special Pages have several upload/image links

    • System will send you a cryptic e-mail message
    • Check account Preferences
      • Reminders, Watch settings, view preferences

      • We will be implementing a consistent Google search to over-arch or replace the Mediawiki search
      • Default (current) does not search for words shorter than 4 characters (so much for technology's famous TLAs!)
