Mac

NOTE: VPN is only available for Mac OS X

From your Applications folder, open Internet Connect.

After the program opens, from the File menu, select New VPN Connection Window...

(You may be prompted to provide your administrator username and password for the computer if you are not logged in with a user with that access level)

Note: The first time you do this, you may see a box warning you that you don't have an active AirPort, modem, or PPoE connection. Click Use VPN. You may also see a box prompting you to set up your VPN connection. Click Continue.

Select PPTP if prompted to choose between L2TP/IPSec and PPTP.

For network storage to be accessible, the network settings of this VPN connection must be configured to have a Search Domain of colgate.edu.

In the VPN Connection window, next to "Server name:", type vpn.colgate.edu

For "User name:" and "Password:", type your network username and password.

Click Connect

Windows

Look for the Network Places Icon on your desktop or in the Start Menu, right click on it and choose properties.

Choose to "Create a New Connection"

Choose to "Connect to the network at my workplace".

Choose "Virtual Private Network connection"

You can type "Colgate University" for the Company name.

You can choose to dial connection if that your internet access method.

Type vpn.colgate.edu for the server.

You can choose to add a shortcut to your desktop. Finish.

When initiating the VPN connection use Colgate\Username and your Colgate Network password.


Ubuntu 8.04, Hardy Heron

First, check to see that the pptp support is enabled. Go to System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager. Find the package "network-manager-pptp", and install it. Close the Synaptic Package Manager.

Click on the Network Manager tray icon, and choose VPN Connections - Configure VPN.

In the VPN Connections box, click the Add button. In the wizard, choose PPTP tunnel, and click the Forward button.

In the next window, enter a descriptive Connection Name, such as Colgate VPN. For Gateway, enter "vpn.colgate.edu" (without quotes). Click Finish, and your VPN connection will be created.

To connect to the VPN, click on the Network Manager tray icon and choose VPN Connections - Colgate VPN. Enter your login and password when prompted. The login should be entered in the format "COLGATE\username" (without quotes), where username is your Colgate user name.


Note for configuration in Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) or 9.04 (Jaunty):

To make the VPN connection work, two changes are needed in the Advanced settings (Click the Advanced button).

- Uncheck "EAP" at the top - check the "mppe" parameter

Without making these changes, the VPN connection may not work.
