POSC335 Environmental Politics
Was contacted by a student in POSC335 today. Trying to get info from the prof about the assignment. Most likely, the same as last spring. See Assignment page for last spring's assignment and tips. --MJW 12:34, 5 November 2009 (EST)
LexisNexis outage
LexisNexis online products will be unavailable to users from October 31, 9:00 p.m. through November 01, 2009, 5:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
All LexisNexis online products will be unavailable during a scheduled maintenance outage related to the end of Daylight Savings Time. Products affected include LexisNexis Academic, Congressional, and Statistical. If users try to access the service during that time, they will receive a message, “service unavailable, please try again later.” --MJW 11:47, 30 October 2009 (EDT)

Group Studies
Group studies cannot be booked using EMS (policy change because we couldn't limit bookings to only 4 hours). People should be directed to the Circulation desk, either in person or by phone.
FYI on Seminar rooms:
- for booking 3 days or more in advance, use EMS
- for booking 1-2 days in advance, go to Karen J during the day, circulation desk at night
- for same day booking in the evening, go to circulation desk

GPO PURLs
GPO still having some PURL issues. --MJW 13:40, 6 October 2009 (EDT)
On Monday, October 5, 2009, GPO conducted testing of new procedures for the backup PURL application and server. The testing took place between 9:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. During this time both the server and the application were operational.
The test was successful and once it was completed the IP address was restored to the original PURL production server. Between 10:00 p.m. and midnight there was intermittent access to PURL URLs while network resources re-synchronized. The address resolution protocol cache on the routers required refreshing after the IP address change that occurred during testing. The server and application remained functional.
At about noon today, 6 October, GPO began experiencing intermittent IP address problems, which affect the PURL servers. GPO IT staff are working to resolve the problem.
GPO apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused. We thank you for your patience as we work to improve business processes that ensure public access to Government information.
Joanne says students are using the new condom sized wipes for their hands instead of keyboards and supplies are going down at too fast a rate. She recommends keeping one basket in the middle of the reference desk where we can try to enforce the keyboard only rule and direct patrons to the hand sanitizers on the wall.
I wonder if we should consider removing them from the reference desk when it's not staffed. On Monday, when I came back to the desk after answering a question in the reference area that took no more than a few minutes, half of the contents of the basket had been taken! That's not just one person using it for his/her hands. --MJW 13:40, 6 October 2009 (EDT)
Fileshare for SOAN 453 Senior Seminar
I've had a couple of questions already about this. Students in the SOAN senior seminar are supposed to be accessing a fileshare server to get to datasets for their class. They should have the name of the fileshare, but the directions apparently leave out the critical step of mapping the drive. A student needs to log into their network account, go to my computer, click on Tools-->Map Network Drive, and then copy-paste the big long \\file.... blah blah blah thingie they got from their professor. If it still isn't working, they need to speak to their professor.

Out of Color Ink!!!!!
We're out of color inkjet cartridges, both in the credenza and in the supply closet - again. Please remember to pull from the storage closet to refill the credenza, and let Karen know when we're getting low. Thanks Peter, for sending one down. I'll have Karen order ASAP - i.e. when she gets back from lunch.

LC/REF Student Assistants Website and listserv
If you need to email the LC/REF assistants for any reason, you can send an email to the listserv (LIBR-LCREFASSISTANTS@lists.colgate.edu). You will receive a message saying your email was sent to the list, but you will not receive a copy of it unless you've been subbed to the listserv.
Also, I've given anyone who is scheduled to work at the REF desk access to view [the LC/REF assistants website][1]. Do not log in through the username/password boxes given to you--you need to instead look at the dialog box under that and log in with your email address only.
This is the website we're using to document, train, and organize our students. If you have questions about what a student should and should not be doing, and Debbie K or Debi I are not available to answer it, you can consult the website.

GPO PURL server down
GPO staff continues to give restoration of the PURL server the highest priority. Our goal is to have it operational and accessible early next week.
A script was executed and it continues to run to rebuild the PURL resolution database. At present the database is populated with more than 87,000 of the 115,000 PURLs. The database is being rebuilt at an average rate of 10,000 PURLs every twelve hours.
Because of the availability of backup files, no data was lost. For additional information from earlier postings about the disruption in the PURL service, please refer to the FDLP Desktop General Announcements section at <http://www.fdlp.gov> and display 10 articles.
This will affect most connections to online docs from within the catalog.

Paper Cut
Possible problems with Wireless users - a student was told by the IT helpdesk that he could print to our printers when connected to the network. MP not so sure. However, be sure that the student is logged into the student wireless network, not the guest network. In the one instance so for, the student never got to test the theory, because his print job came out with another student's! Report to IT.
--MJW 10:52, 1 September 2009 (EDT)
The explanation of the job coming out with the other student's is that the computer was setup to print directly to the printer and not through the print queue. So it actually came out at the same time, not on the same print job. ITS will be disabling the ability to print directly to printers very shortly. Apparently, setting up non-Colgate owned computers to print to print queues is "tricky". ITS's recommendation is to use the dedicated computers in Case-Geyer for printing whenever possible. In cases where that is not possible, the ITS Service desk will assist users in setting up the computers to print via the print queues.

SOAN 102 Ethnography Assignment for Wehrer's Class
Margaret Wehrer has asked her students to locate an ethnography this week to bring to class on Monday, Sept. 7th. I have created a [SOAN 102 class guide][2]and one of the links on the right side of the page will take you to a [Finding an Ethnography][3]page I created to guide students through the process of finding and evaluating potential ethnographies. They have not be introduced to the guide yet, so please lead them here.

Computing support via RCCs (Residential Computer Consultants)
By way of follow up regarding the claimed 24 hour computing support for students, I contacted Claudia Servadio-Coyne who supervises the SOURCE students. Please see Claudia's note below. The RCCs she mentions are computing consultants who work in the residence halls (and there's one who works with off-campus students). Since many of us may have need of this information as we work with students I'm forwarding this to everyone.
Charlotte
"Thanks for bring this to my attention. The RCC's technically can work any hours they wish and are provided with cell phones so it is like 24/7. I'll make sure they are not overselling our support."

APA 6 in RefWorks
- APA 6th style is not a major change from APA 5th output style. The new version does not use the database name with the exception of ERIC documents (reports). We have removed the database field from all reference types with the exception of reports.
- The new edition of APA has changed the manner in which authors are to be listed in the text and in the reference list. The new reference list guidelines state that when there are seven or more authors there should only be seven authors presented. When there are more than seven authors the first six are to be listed, ellipses added after the sixth, and the last author added at the end. In order for RefWorks to adhere to these changes, we will need to make modifications to our current Output Style Editor which will require program development. In the short-term, our new APA style will list all authors and will require the user to manually remove the extra authors and add the ellipses.
- The new guidelines allow for the inclusion of up to five authors in the first instance of an in-text citation and the use of the first author with ‘et al.’ in all subsequent citations of the same reference. This too, will require APA specific development in RefWorks.
- We realize this is not an ideal solution and apologize for this inconvenience. We will be working with our development team to address these issues as quickly as possible and hope to have the necessary program changes loaded within the near future. The reason that we are posting the style before the program development can be completed is to give our users a chance to review the style and to send us their input and suggestions with the intent of having an accurate and comprehensive presentation of the 6th prior to the next academic term. We would especially appreciate hearing from you, the RefWorks admins, about this style. If you have any feedback, questions, comments or concerns please do not hesitate to contact support@refworks-cos.com.

Noisy computer fans/hard drives
Around 2:45 this afternoon, the fans on almost all the computers in the public area started revving. It sounded like an airplane getting ready to take off. The noise lasted about 5-15 minutes. I called it into the Helpline and ITS will send someone over tomorrow about that time to observe. Most like cause is a pushed update. The people who were logged into computers or trying to login to computers said that performance was slower than usual.
--MJW 15:34, 4 June 2009 (EDT)
Update FINALLY got someone to come look at the computers at the appropriate time (2:45 instead of 3:45 or 1:45)! The anti-virus software was doing a scan - hence all the spinning. IT will "see what they can do" to change the time from 2:45PM to 2:45 AM. --MJW 14:45, 25 June 2009 (EDT)

MLA & APA style guidelines have changed
Please review recent changes to the Citing Sources page for the APA style at http://www.cod.edu/library/research/citenet.htm
The biggest change: full-text journal article references should include a DOI number (digital object identifier, persistent link to the article), IF AVAILABLE. If the DOI is not available in the bibliographic record for the article, the name of the database where the article is located is indicated instead, as was the case before.
The problem: not all databases include the DOI in the record, for example, Academic OneFile and CINAHL. As time marches on, we will see databases and their companies catch up to this change. We will also see academic institutions and their libraries catching up, just as we are. By the way, the OWL web site and the Diana Hacker site which we list as resources, include this DOI change. NoodleBib also has a spot on the form for a DOI.
Take a moment to look up a topic in Academic Search Premier or your favorite journal article database. You will find that EBSCO lists the DOI in either the brief or full bibliographic record.
This change, as well as examples for other types of electronic references, are compiled in a new supplement to the APA style manual called APA Style Guide to Electronic References (online and print). We’re likely to see these two publications collapse into a new edition in 2010.. It concerns new updates to APA. I hope you find this useful.

2003 Campus Climate Survey
By way of update to Emily's note below: Frank/Clarence noted that Carolyn Hsu/Landon Reid conducted the survey for the University so they may be a source of the data should a student inquire again.
cdroll 2/19/09
Had a student on chat on Saturday afternoon looking for the results from the 2003 Campus Climate Survey. I expect there is a desire to compare this with the results of the 2009 yet to be completed survey. Nothing listed in our catalog. Checked with Carl Peterson who replied: "The archive doesn't have it. In fact, we have very little from the Dean of Students' office. What we do is from the 60's and 70's. I expect the student will have to go to the issuing department. Don't know if it will be public information or not."
Print Release Station at the Reference Desk
Print Release Station FAQ's
- All jobs printed to \\printsv01\case-refdesk-libr will be captured by the print release station. You can avoid the print release station by printing to \\printsv02\case-refdesk-libr or to the east or west printers.
- Print jobs are associated with the network login. Users who log in with their network username/password can swipe their Gate card. On rare occasions, the card is not currently associated with the network login - if that happens use the keyboard to login using their username/password. (the most common problem with the card swipe is people attach things to the card which pulls part of the card out when swiping so the entire id number is not read)
- PUBREF users need to use the keyboard and login as PUBREF to see their print jobs. They will see all the PUBREF jobs but can identify their jobs by the computer name towards the right of the screen.
- Print jobs always go to the printer originally directed. Users can see all of their jobs at any release station but when released they always go to where they were sent.
- Users can only see their own jobs.
- Public Service Librarians and staff are administrators can see everyone's jobs and either cancel or release them. Please be careful not to delete O'Conner jobs are as they displaying and are live. Administrators can currently see all jobs in Case and in O'Connor. We are checking to see if that can be limited to just Case/Cooley jobs
- The release station logs off after 30 seconds of inactivity.
- Print jobs which have not been printed are deleted after 60 minutes.
- If there are problems with the release station - swipe in with your ID card - as an administrator select the exit button in the lower left of the screen and then restart the workstation.
- Report any problems to Mike, Cindy, or Charlotte.

AnthroSource problems
Forwarded to ref desk email account by Ian. Colgate has the same problem listed below (although I searched Peru ancient, in case the Andean was a problem - variant on AND). MJW 11:57, 19 January 2009 (EST)
---Original Message---
From: SERIALST: Serials in Libraries Discussion Forum mailto:SERIALST@list.uvm.edu On Behalf Of Coonin, Bryna Sent: Friday, January 16, 2009 1:08 PM To: SERIALST@LIST.UVM.EDU Subject: Re: [SERIALST] AnthroSource and Wiley-Blackwell
We've had some problems searching AnthroSource within the new interface. I don't know whether this is universal (forgive me if not) but the problem we are having is that no searches involving more than one term are being executed. So, into the box labeled "AnthroSource Search" at the right-hand top of the first screen type just the word: Peru
You get about 561 articles. A number of them have the word Andean in the title, so we do know such items exist in the database.
Then proceed to the Advanced Search and use the box allowed for "All of the words" (AnthroSource treats the Boolean AND as a stop word). Type in: Peru Andean
The response to these searches is:
"Your search did not find any matching articles. Please try again."
We have contacted Erika R. Schweitzer, Senior Account Manager at Wiley-Blackwell, who has asked a colleague in sales support to look into it. It might help WB to know whether others are having a similar problem or whether this is very localized.

I've condensed 4 previous messages about videos into one entry in the Common Questions section. --MJW 10:14, 18 April 2008 (EDT)
Media in Kindler
Report problems with media equipment to Circulation. They will pass the info on to Mike Roberts in ITS.
VHS/DVD/CDs
There are 12 VHS/DVD/CD players and 3 remotes for the players. Remotes are used to skip to selected sections. Monitors for these players must be switched on separately. On the side of each monitor is a series of switches:
• Bottom switch turns on monitor
• Next highest switch scrolls through a menu of media types - correct type is AV
• Others increase volume and brightness
Headphones plug into the monitor, not the player.
These players do not play all formats. DVDs differ in 2 ways (at least):
• By region; most of our players play region x material
• Whether they are pressed (big commercial firms) or recorded (DVD-R)
• There may also be encoding-decoding issues (copyright protection?)
DVD-R discs
They often play better in computers than in the players. Try in players first. DVD-R discs with the blue color on the back side of the disc play best with the software program WinDVD to play them and this is often standard on student's own laptops or computers. They do not play in Windows Media player or Real PLayer both of which are standard on the public computer image in Case Geyer. Emily talked with Max about this widespread problem 4/20. Max relayed to the ITS folks who control the public image. They are considering. Should follow up with them early summer and call upon Joanne's help if necessary as this needs to be resolved.(updated by EHH 4/23)
Found one DVD with blue back-side that wouldn't play in computers or in Kindler, but does play in Room 340 (note put on reserve label on DVD). Kindler has Samsung players, Room340 has Sony. Perhaps that's the difference? --MJW 11:26, 30 April 2008 (EDT)
Different regions
ITS has installed one multiregional player in the Kindler. It is player number one. MJW for EHH
Cassettes/Music CDs
2 cassette decks and dedicated CD players are stacked on top of each other in 2 carrels and each stack shares 1 headphone. Headphones must be switched between the 2 players. Don’t forget that cassette tapes may be recorded on both sides and are flipped at the end of a side.
LP Turntables
There are 3 turntables. Both the turntable and the amplifier must be turned on. Use the lever to raise and lower the arm (no auto play or eject at the end of a LP).
--MJW 15:09, 17 April 2008 (EDT)
Resolved sections I'm creating sections for "dead" stuff - problems that have been resolved but that we may want to keep for records - e.g. all printing issues that have been resolved. Feel free to help move anything to those sections that you think relevant. Shorter pages will make search results easier to find.

Wiki format reminder
Folks, a while back, Francesca created separate pages for Assignments, Common Questions, Government Documents, and Technical Issues. In essence, only Breaking News is on the opening page. In order to add things to those other categories (articles, folders, ???), click on the Category name and then click on edit. We've ended up with material in 2 places for most categories. I think I've gotten everything back to "normal"
--MJW 16:03, 19 April 2007 (EDT)
Problem DVDs There is a problem playing some DVD's. Some of the DVD's ordered lately have come from specialized companies. They are blue in color when you turn them over. These will not play on the new DVD players in the Kindler listening and viewing area. They will however play on computers throughout the library. Please be aware of this and offer headphones to patrons so they may listen on a computer.
Mike Roberts in IT who takes care of the equipment in this area is aware of this problem and working on a fix for the new machines. If this fix can not be done, then we will seek out a few new players that play all formats of DVD's. Rhonda Pancoe is also aware of this and when ordering new DVD's has no way of telling what company will send her this type of DVD. This problem is not the case with any of the popular films that come in.
Students - Please be advised that when a patron comes to the desk and says the DVD they have will not play, open the case, look at the back of the DVD and if it is blue check out headphones to them and they can watch and listen on a computer.
